Red Hill: Hawaii upholds order for Navy to empty fuel tanks

Captain James Meyer, the Commanding Officer of the Hawaii Naval Facilities, testified at an emergency order hearing last week that his “working theory” is a May fuel leak that eventually migrated into the access tunnels and the fire fighting lines, which caused the November spill at the water well. The Navy initially said the leak amounted to about 1,600 gallons of jet fuel, but an internal review obtained by The Post showed that a fuel tank emptied to 473 barrels, or roughly 19,000 gallons, in less than a minute.
